The short answer
Most adults need only 20 to 35 mcg of chromium a day, and the label Daily Value is 35 mcg. Chromium supplements usually contain 200 to 500 mcg, and blood sugar trials often used 200 to 1,000 mcg. The results are mixed: reviews of many trials found small drops in blood sugar, but the American Diabetes Association says the evidence is not enough to recommend chromium supplements. If you take insulin, metformin or thyroid medicine, talk to your doctor first.
Chromium is a trace mineral, and it appears in a long list of blood sugar and weight supplements, sometimes in amounts too small to matter. We read the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheet on chromium, which summarizes the trials and the official intake recommendations. This guide is general information, not medical advice.
How Much Chromium You Need Per Day
| Group | Adequate Intake per day |
|---|---|
| Men 19 to 50 | 35 mcg |
| Men 51 and older | 30 mcg |
| Women 19 to 50 | 25 mcg |
| Women 51 and older | 20 mcg |
| Daily Value on labels | 35 mcg |
Figures from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. No upper limit has been set for chromium, but NIH notes that the data are limited and advises caution.
How Much Chromium Supplements Contain
| Product type | Typical amount |
|---|---|
| Multivitamin and mineral | 35 to 120 mcg |
| Chromium only supplement | 200 to 500 mcg, some up to 1,000 mcg |
| Blood sugar trials | Often 200 to 1,000 mcg a day |
Chromium and Blood Sugar: What the Research Shows
The trials point in different directions. In one 1997 trial of 180 adults with type 2 diabetes, 1,000 mcg a day for 4 months lowered fasting blood sugar to 128 mg/dL compared with 159 mg/dL on placebo, and HbA1c to 6.6% compared with 8.5%. A later 24 week trial of 137 adults using the same 1,000 mcg dose found no significant effect on insulin sensitivity, fasting blood sugar or HbA1c.
A 2019 review that pulled together 58 trials found that chromium lowered fasting blood sugar and HbA1c slightly, but said the clinical significance was unclear. The American Diabetes Association concluded in 2015 that the evidence is insufficient to support routine use of chromium supplements for blood sugar control.
The honest summary: chromium may help a little in some people, the effect is small and inconsistent, and it is not a replacement for diabetes treatment.
Chromium and Weight Loss
A 2019 analysis of 21 trials with 1,316 adults found that people taking chromium lost about 0.75 kg (about 1.7 lb) more than those on placebo over 9 to 24 weeks, with no meaningful change in waist size. A Cochrane review called the effect on body weight of debatable clinical relevance, and NIH describes it as having little clinical significance.
Chromium Picolinate and Other Forms
Supplements use chromium picolinate, nicotinate, polynicotinate, chloride or histidinate. The body absorbs very little of any form: about 1.2% of chromium picolinate and about 0.4% of chromium chloride, according to NIH. Chromium picolinate is the form you will see most often on blood sugar products.
Chromium Side Effects and Interactions
Low blood sugar. Chromium may increase insulin sensitivity. Taken with insulin, metformin or other diabetes medicines, the effects may add up and raise the risk of low blood sugar, according to NIH.
Thyroid medicine. In a small study, chromium picolinate taken at the same time as levothyroxine reduced how much of the thyroid medicine was absorbed.
Kidney and liver. The official review found no adverse effects linked to high intakes from food or supplements, but people with kidney or liver disease may be more susceptible. Isolated case reports have described anemia, liver problems and kidney failure.
Chromium in Products We Reviewed
| Product | Chromium per day | Compared with |
|---|---|---|
| FIMAVYN | 100 mcg (286% DV) | Within the range of a multivitamin, below most blood sugar trials |
| Olivaro Drops | 0.7 mcg per 1 ml (2% DV) | A small fraction of the daily need, far below any trial |
| Sugar Reset | 0.7 mcg per 1 ml (2% DV) | Same label as Olivaro |
FIMAVYN also contains berberine and alpha lipoic acid, which can lower blood sugar too. Our berberine dosage guide covers how that ingredient compares with the studies.
