Our verdict: 6/10
Advanced Amino Formula comes from Advanced Bionutritionals, the company behind the Advanced Memory Formula, and it is sold as a one time purchase with a 90 day refund that even covers your original shipping. The label shows 5,000 mg of eight essential amino acids per serving, but not how much of each, and it leaves out histidine, which NIH’s MedlinePlus lists as one of the nine essential amino acids. Research on amino acid supplements in older adults points to small gains in strength, not the “reverse muscle loss” promise on the sales page.

The formula contains phenylalanine, and the brand itself says people with the genetic disorder PKU should only take amino acids under a doctor’s supervision. If you have kidney or liver disease, or your doctor has limited your protein intake, ask before adding an amino acid supplement.
Advanced Amino Formula is sold to adults who want to keep muscle as they age. We read the official sales page, its FAQ, the Supplement Facts label and the guarantee, and checked the claims against NIH’s MedlinePlus and two meta-analyses on amino acid supplements in older adults. We did not buy or test the product.

Who Makes Advanced Amino Formula?
Advanced Bionutritionals, the same company that sells the Advanced Memory Formula, which earned one of our better scores for printing every dose. The formula is presented by Dr. Frank Shallenberger, whom the page describes as a physician practicing for over 44 years. The page states that he is paid by Advanced Bionutritionals for formulating and endorsing the product, a disclosure most brands we review leave out.
The Advanced Amino Formula Label

Five tablets provide 5,000 mg of a blend of L leucine, L valine, L isoleucine, L lysine HCl, L phenylalanine, L threonine, L methionine and L tryptophan, with 25 calories. Other ingredients are vegetable stearic acid, silica and cellulose.
The total is printed, but the amount of each amino acid is not. That matters most for leucine, the amino acid most associated with muscle building. Our guide on what a proprietary blend hides explains why split amounts help. Even if the blend were split evenly, each amino acid would be about 625 mg.
The Missing Amino Acid
The sales page calls the formula “the exact right balance of all 8 essential amino acids”. NIH’s MedlinePlus lists nine essential amino acids: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Histidine is the one missing.
The brand’s FAQ answers this directly and says histidine “isn’t actually an essential amino acid, because your body can make histidine”. That is not how MedlinePlus classifies it. MedlinePlus says essential amino acids must come from food, so histidine still has to come from what you eat. The bigger issue is what this says about how the page handles science.
What the Research Says About Amino Acids and Muscle
| Review | What it covered | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| Cheng et al., British Journal of Nutrition, 2018 | 39 trials, 4,274 older adults with acute or chronic conditions, protein and amino acid supplements | Small improvements in fat free mass, strength and function overall. Essential amino acids had the largest effects on strength and function, but no low risk of bias trial used them, and the authors warned against strong conclusions |
| Bai et al., European Journal of Nutrition, 2022 | 35 trials in older adults, whey, essential amino acids and BCAA | Small gains in handgrip strength and muscle mass. Essential amino acids improved handgrip strength; whey protein significantly increased limb muscle mass |
Two points follow. First, amino acid supplements can help older adults a little, mostly on strength, and the evidence is mixed in quality. Second, the second review contradicts the sales page on whey: in that analysis, whey was the supplement type that increased muscle mass. We found no study of Advanced Amino Formula itself. For daily protein targets and how food compares with supplements, see our guide to protein and amino acids for older adults.
The Sales Page Claims
- “Reverse muscle loss”. The page says research shows you can reverse muscle loss by taking Advanced Amino Formula. The reviews above show small average gains, not a reversal, and they did not test this product.
- Whey protein. The page says “83% of the protein in whey protein powder is turned into sugar in the body” and calls whey “one of the worst sources of protein”. We found no reference for this on the page, and the 2022 meta-analysis found whey was the supplement that increased muscle mass.
- Broad benefits. The page lists better mood, younger looking skin and hair, injury prevention and relief from food sensitivity symptoms. We found no evidence presented for these.
- Testimonials. One buyer credits it for loose teeth feeling firmer and less hip clicking. The fine print says testimonials are not guarantees.
- Customer ratings. The page shows 3,144 reviews with a 4.1 average and 81% recommending it, a more realistic picture than the perfect scores many sales pages display.

Guarantee and Refund Terms
The page offers a 90 day guarantee: if you are not satisfied for any reason, return the bottles, even empty, within 90 days for a full refund of what you paid, including the original shipping. You pay the return postage. The page also promises an improvement in strength and well being “in the first few months” or your money back. Full details are on the brand’s return policy page.
This is one of the fairer guarantees we have read: empty bottles are accepted and the original shipping is refunded. Ninety days is shorter than some competitors, so decide within that window.
Is Advanced Amino Formula Safe?
PKU. The formula includes phenylalanine. The brand says people with PKU should only use amino acids under a doctor’s supervision.
Kidney or liver disease and protein limits. If a doctor has restricted your protein intake, ask before adding 5 grams of amino acids a day.
Tablet count. A serving is 5 tablets a day, which some people find hard to keep up with.

Final Verdict: 6/10
Advanced Amino Formula is an honest purchase in its structure: a known company, a disclosed physician payment, a printed total dose, no subscription and a refund that covers your shipping. It loses points on the science it is sold with: individual amounts are hidden, histidine is missing and dismissed, the whey claim is unsupported and “reverse muscle loss” goes well beyond the small gains research shows.
Who might consider it: an older adult who struggles to eat enough protein, wants a convenient vegan option and will combine it with strength training. Who should skip it: people with PKU, kidney or liver disease or protein limits without a doctor’s advice, and anyone who already eats plenty of protein.
