Our verdict: 7/10

Magnesium Breakthrough is one of the most transparent products we have reviewed. BIOptimizers is an established company with a named founder, the label prints 500 mg of elemental magnesium per serving, and the guarantee runs 365 days. The catches: 500 mg is above the 350 mg daily upper limit NIH sets for magnesium from supplements, the seven forms are listed without individual amounts and include magnesium oxide, and every order on the ClickBank page is a monthly subscription. Research on magnesium for sleep is encouraging but thin.

Know this before you order

It is a subscription. At checkout, the single bottle costs $35 plus $7.75 shipping, and the same $42.75 is charged again every month until you cancel. The dose is high. NIH sets the upper limit for magnesium from supplements at 350 mg a day for adults, and higher amounts can cause diarrhea, nausea and cramps. If you have kidney disease, take antibiotics or osteoporosis drugs, or are pregnant, talk to your doctor first.

Magnesium Breakthrough is sold for sleep, stress and energy. We read the official sales page, the Supplement Facts label, the ClickBank checkout and the BIOptimizers refund policy, and checked the dose against NIH and a 2021 meta-analysis on magnesium and insomnia. We did not buy or test the product.

Who Makes Magnesium Breakthrough?

The label says it is manufactured for BIOptimizers USA Inc., in Reno, Nevada. The sales page is signed by Wade Lightheart, named as president and cofounder, and says the company has been in business for 15 years. Unlike most products we review, the company, its address, phone support and return warehouse are all identified.

The Magnesium Breakthrough Label

Magnesium Breakthrough Supplement Facts label

A serving of 2 capsules provides 500 mg of elemental magnesium, 119% of the Daily Value, from 1,701 mg of a magnesium blend of seven forms: magnesium chelate, bisglycinate, Sucrosomial magnesium (as magnesium oxide), malate, orotate, taurate and citrate. It adds 2 mg of vitamin B6, 1 mg of manganese and 10 mg of a humic/fulvic blend.

The total magnesium is printed, which is what matters most. What is not printed is how much comes from each form. That matters because forms absorb differently: NIH notes that forms that dissolve well, such as citrate and chloride, tend to be absorbed better than magnesium oxide. One of the seven forms here is oxide based. Our guide on what a proprietary blend hides explains why split amounts help, and our magnesium guide compares the forms.

Is 500 mg of Magnesium Too Much?

Reference Amount
Recommended intake for adults, food plus supplements (NIH) 310 to 420 mg a day
Upper limit for magnesium from supplements, adults (NIH) 350 mg a day
Magnesium Breakthrough, 2 capsules 500 mg

The full serving is 150 mg above the NIH upper limit for supplemental magnesium. NIH explains that high doses from supplements can cause diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping. The limit applies to supplements and medicines, not to magnesium from food. One option is to start with one capsule, about 250 mg, which stays under the limit, and talk to a doctor before taking more.

Does Magnesium Help You Sleep?

The best summary we found is a 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies. It found three randomized trials comparing oral magnesium with placebo in 151 older adults with insomnia.

  • Falling asleep: people taking magnesium fell asleep about 17 minutes faster than with placebo.
  • Total sleep: sleep time improved by about 16 minutes, but the difference was not statistically significant.
  • Quality of the evidence: all trials had moderate to high risk of bias, and the authors rated the evidence low to very low.

The authors concluded that the research is not strong enough for firm recommendations, but that because magnesium is cheap and widely available, the trials may support trying it for insomnia symptoms. That is a fair way to see this product: a reasonable thing to try, not a sleep treatment. Our magnesium for sleep guide covers doses, forms and the research in more detail.

The Sales Page Claims

  • “Doctor Approved”. The headline says this, without naming the doctor who approved it.
  • Depression. The page says that in one trial, 450 mg of magnesium “improved mood as effectively as an antidepressant drug”. Magnesium is not a substitute for depression treatment, and anyone on antidepressants should not change them because of a supplement.
  • Comparison with other brands. The page compares itself with other magnesium products and warns about mercury in some brands, without naming those brands.
  • What it does better than most. The page cites 26 references on magnesium research, names its founder and company, and prints the magnesium dose.

If you want a single order, cancel the subscription right after buying through ClickBank’s order support at clkbank.com, and keep the confirmation email.

At $35 a bottle, it works out to about $1.17 a day before shipping, one of the lowest prices on our site.

Refund Policy

Point What the BIOptimizers policy says
Window 365 days from the original order date
Opened bottles The first bottle of your first order counts as a trial. For a full refund on a multi bottle order, all other bottles must be unopened; used bottles after that get a prorated refund
Subscriptions The same rules apply to subscription and one off purchases
Shipping costs Not refunded
How to start Contact support by phone or email for a return authorization (RMA) before shipping anything back

A year is the longest window we have seen. Just know that “money back” means the price of the product, not the shipping, and that only the first bottle can be opened for a full refund.

Is Magnesium Breakthrough Safe?

Stomach side effects. Diarrhea, nausea and cramps are the most common problems with high magnesium doses, according to NIH. Starting with one capsule lowers the risk.

Medications. NIH says magnesium can interact with oral bisphosphonates for osteoporosis and with tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics. Take them at different times and ask your pharmacist.

Kidney disease. NIH notes that the kidneys control magnesium levels by excreting the excess, so people with kidney disease should not take magnesium supplements without a doctor’s advice.

The label’s own caution. It tells people who are pregnant, nursing, have a serious medical condition or take any medications to consult a healthcare practitioner first.

Final Verdict: 7/10

Magnesium Breakthrough is what we would like to see more often: a known company, a printed dose, a fair price and a long guarantee. It loses points for a dose above the NIH limit for supplements, a blend that hides how much of each form you get, a subscription that is the only way to buy on the ClickBank page, and sleep research that is still thin.

Who might consider it: a healthy adult who wants to try magnesium for sleep or stress, is willing to start with one capsule, and will manage or cancel the subscription. Who should skip it: anyone with kidney disease, anyone taking antibiotics or osteoporosis drugs without asking a doctor, and anyone who does not want a recurring charge.
